Optimize Your Wordpress Blog For Search Engines With These Plugins
January 4, 2010 by Elliott Cross
Since I began blogging, I have learned quite a few things about Wordpress and blogging in general. Some of the things that I have learned deal with search engine optimization techniques (SEO), optimizing your blog for usability and accessibility, while others make the site visitors experience better. These few items will hopefully help you in your site, whether you are planning a new blog or already have a blog.
There is so much discussion about what works best for search engine optimization, and while there are many different thoughts and options, it still comes down to a couple of basics that anyone can do. You need to write good content that is meaningful and concise. Some sites still believe in keyword stuffing the page. You’ve seen those, the ones that use the same set of words over and over again.
Another basic is to utilize the many tools and ideas about search engine optimization techniques carefully. Some of the methods may not apply to your site, especially if you don’t have direct access to the coding of your site. How could you modify the keywords or add special items to the code of your site if you can’t directly access your site’s code?
Some of the ways to optimize your Wordpress blog is to use plugins. These will work only if you are hosting your own Wordpress blog, and not on the free wordpress.com site. So, here is a list of a few of the plugins I use and wish I had known about from the beginning. They are in no particular order, and I hope you enjoy them!
One of the first plugins for Wordpress that I wish I had known about and used from the beginning is the All-in-one-SEO-pack. This is a neat little SEO optimizer for your blog that generates the blog title (what you see at the top of the browser window), and creates variable title styles depending upon what page you are currently on. I highly recommend this plugin to create more SEO friendly sites.
There is also a section on your posts page to create a specific title, description and keywords for your new post. This is great SEO in one package!
Google Site Map Generator It never hurts to make your blog or site more accessible to Google, so with this plugin, a site map is automatically created for you. The Google Site Map Generator will allow you to specify the site map file location, g-zip it, and ping Google with any changes to your site. Plus several other features.
Akismet is great at preventing spam, in my opinion, as it has saved me a lot of time cleaning up my comments from that junk. Bad Behavior works in conjunction with Akismet and other systems to prevent spam from ever reaching your site.
To quote from the Bad Behavior site:
Bad Behavior complements other link spam solutions by acting as a gatekeeper, preventing spammers from ever delivering their junk, and in many cases, from ever reading your site in the first place. This keeps your site’s load down, makes your site logs cleaner, and can help prevent denial of service conditions caused by spammers.
You can’t go wrong with more protection against spammers!
In conclusion I hope you have enjoyed this article, and found something useful. These plugins have helped me tremendously in my blogging experience, and I hope they do with yours as well.
