Search Engine Optimization, Keyword Phrases, Exact Matches
Until very recently, I just couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. No matter how good my content was I just wasn’t getting a look in on the search engines. Have you ever felt this way? I suspected that I needed to be a technical genius just to have the pleasure of seeing my stuff appear somewhere before page ten in Google. I used to feel that way and I know it can all seem so overwhelming and confusing.
- What I couldn’t resolve was how an ordinary internet entrepreneur could make an impact in the cut throat world of internet marketing, if they were not some kind of marketing Guru.
- It seemed impossible to keep up with constantly changing world of “Google Relevancy and Compliance” – I’m just not that kind of person.
Recently however, all that changed and while I’m still no Guru, I’m getting very satisfactory search engine ranking thank you very much! It’s pretty simple really… just give them what they want.
Sounds a bit trite doesn’t it and I’m sorry about that. I know you were probably expecting some really technical description of what you need to do but as I said before, I’m not really that kind of person, I don’t do complex and technical if I can help it.
I have just learned what we need to do right now, I’ve just been shown how to do it and how to maximize our results as quickly as possible and I’m happy to share some of what I’ve learned.
Let’s start with your main web presence and look at what is essential for you to have set up in order to make the search engines very, very happy – Google, Yahoo, MSN and AOL to be precise.
It’s quite important to understand the order in which you have to impress them.
- It’s important because it’s Google that sets the context for what a good search engine should list.
- Google is interested in listing quality, relevant and unique content that gives their readers exactly what they are looking for.
- So in terms of keeping the search engines happy, Google is your first priority.
What is it that Google and all the other internet search engines are looking to do?
- Make money from advertising on their search engines.
- Provided their readers with relevant, unique, quality content, and
I recently heard of some Internet Gurus who were spending nearly $200,000 each and every month on Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising and they couldn’t even get Google to speak with them! These big players (Google, Yahoo, MSN and the like) are not really looking for your money. This is not their priority.
I’m not sure how I would respond to that given that they were spending up to around a Million dollars a year with them but you can be sure I wouldn’t be a very happy camper! I’d expect a lot more and at least have them looking to provide me with great service and look for ways to add value to our relationship. It appears, from my observations, that if you are an internet entrepreneur with business net income of under $10 Million per annum… don’t waste their time, you are not even in their consciousness. That’s what I’m hearing.
So, what does that mean to you?
It means that advertising on the search engines doesn’t work. What it also means is simply this, they don’t care about you, or the money you lose with them everyday. That’s pretty big news really and it made me wonder what I was going to do about it. I just wanted to know how to play the game, keep them happy and get myself listed.
- What I found most interesting was that those at Google head office, have deliberately created a lot of mystery around their rules and regulations and made it very difficult for people to successfully negotiate their “happiness metre”.
- I keep hearing the same questions from my internet marketing classmates “What are their rules?” and “Why don’t they tell us where to find an updated, comprehensive overview of their requirements?
- Believe it or not, the answer is very simple. They don’t want to make it easy for the gambling, cash gifters and porn sites to advertise with them.
- That’s what all the mystery is about and I for one am very grateful to them for all the work they put into making hard for people.
No really, I am grateful. Just think about it. It’s been a long time since you’ve seen a paid ad for some penis enlargement drug, or some gambling site on the search engines. That’s because that is exactly the kind of ads and content they do NOT want and neither do most of their clients.
So, next time your frustration level gets the best of you, remember to be grateful for all their hard work. There is, however, a simple solution to the problem that this creates.
That’s right!… There are people who understand the mystery system created by the rules of engagement and have a handle on the happiness metre we all have work to and right now, I’m going to list what you need right here in quick bullet points.
Ready?
1. The Must Have Privacy Policy: Ensure that you provide a link to your Privacy policy at the bottom of each of your sales pages, thank you pages and lead capture pages.
- It is absolutely vital, especially if you are taking orders online or collecting email addresses.
- There are templates for these online, however I suggest that you consult an attorney/lawyer/solicitor who is privy to the regulations and laws pertaining to internet marketing and e-commerce.
2. Develop Clear Terms and Conditions: Is it really easy for your customers find out about your refund policy, your returns policy and your other terms and conditions? Are you making any sales?
- If not you better change that really quickly, because without this page in place, you can get burned real quick.
- Oh, and just as a little hint, all the search engines look for both step 1 and 2, when they are checking you out for listing. BIG HINT
3. Contact Us: You absolutely must provide a page that has contact information for you or your business. This is a legal requirement for anyone who has or who is considering starting an online business. Not only that but it is not only crucial for your search engine listings to have this and the above pages.
Now if this is a problem for you. If you don’t want to provide a contact email and a postal address for your business then maybe you don’t really want to have an online business. This is certainly a prerequisite. The search engines want to see that you are a legitimate entrepreneur who is willing to share how to get in contact with them, if they are going to list you they want to know you are for real.
There are really only two types of internet entrepreneurs… A. Entrepreneurs who openly communicate with their customers, what they need to know, simply and easily right up front. B. Entrepreneurs who appear to be a little cagey about their identity, their product or their service and therefore make it difficult for their customers to find out how to contact them.
Hmm, I wonder which one you think the search engines are going to pay more attention to?
4: Your About Us page: This is one page that I tend to forget from time to time. I think to be honest I find this the most difficult because I’m talking about myself BUT I can’t emphasise it enough … this is an extremely important page.
- People want to be able to see a bit about you personally, who you are and maybe a bit about why you are providing your product or service.
- They really want to see your credibility right up front.
- Don’t go overboard here, I mean you are not writing an auto-biography!
These four page, done well will move you into ranks of those sites that all the search engines will consider for listing. But wait, there is more we can do. There is always a little bit more, that’s what makes it interesting and exciting right?
So, what else can we do to help get listed in the major search engines?
- First, submit your site to around 50 – 100 of the major search engines and search engine directories you can find. What’s that? You thought there were only a few of them? No way, there are many more than that. To get yourself started just do a simple Google search for “Search Engine Directories”, and begin from there.
- Next thing you should do, is to continue creating lots of new content pages that are highly keyword optimized. Don’t worry, that’s a topic in itself and there will be an article on keyword research soon. The search engines are not going to list a site that is no being constantly updated. They want FRESH, unique, quality content. FRESH and NEW!
This is why many people create a blog.
