Name Calling
March 23, 2009 by Blogboy
After a couple of years of doing this and listening to this expert and that guru I am here to tell you that most of them don’t know shit about blogging. Oh some of them know a thing about SEO or marketing, but very few of them understand that a blog is meant to convey a message to a person. There are two things that convey that message first and foremost, the name and the description, these can be and often are independent of your domain name.
First the name of your blog is its brand identity. It needs to be something people will remember for it to have any meaning. It also helps if it tells something about your blog. It isn’t important if your blog is the same name as your domain name, though that helps extend the brand even further. Take for example this blog. Blogging For Noobs tells you a lot about the kind of information you will find here and it is easy to remember and type. The longer I have blogged the more I realized that the name wasn’t very searchable so I added to it. Blogging For Noobs became Blogging for Noobs: What is a blog… It has both a memorable title and searchable title that doesn’t leave any doubt who my intended audience is.
The second message is the description. This is the absolute best place to tell the world what your blog is about and make it searchable. I think this is actually the more important of the two messages and one most bloggers and theme designers misss out on. If you look to the new themes I am designing you will see my site description first and foremost at the top of the page. Basically what I am telling you is what you have to say about your blog is more important than what you call your blog. This is true of most products you use. Say the word Pepsi for example and people know who you are, but unless they add one of the famous taglines you aren’t sure what Pepsi is being spoken about. Is it the Pepsi Co company which owns dozens of brand names or will it be that cold refreshing refreshing can of goodness you have chilling in the cooler on a hot day. Name your blog so it is memorable, but do everything in your power to maximize the description for accuracy.
Keep an eye out for my new themes meant to maximize this naming advantage.

Yes, that’s true. The name of a blog is its brand identity. And the brand identity of this blog is very funny. Blooging for Noobs for ever!

I only want to add that the description shouldn’t be to long because then it is boring for the reader. A nice and lean description. thats it!
Hi,
I think these blogs are interesting and useful as well.
Thanks for sharing.
I would have to agree that many bloggers have lost their roots in pursuit of profits. What I like about this blog is that it is easy on the eyes, well organized, and not filled with hype.
Name is nice. Blogging for noobs… like me :)
Good point. You should only use a name which is not in the dictionary if you are looking to really create something new which is not being offered by any site. Twitter for example does not mean a thing until it became so huge that it is now known by almost anyone who has surfed the web.
For blogs, it is best to be very descriptive as blogs as you point it out is made to convey messages to other people.
Hi! I am new to blogging and you are right that not all gurus knows best. Since I am new and have many questions in my mind some of them who respond are not useful instead they are taking me into the wring place so its hard to trust anyone even the gurus.
etcetera’s last blog post..Michael Jackson’s Funeral Live
I say, just write controversially about popular topics and you’re on your way. E.g. “The IPhone is an ugly piece of junk” and away you go.
yes nice blog….keep up that good work!
I agree completely to this post. This will provide a better guide for those who want to start a blog. I first look for blog name and then the description and it gives me an idea of what to expect from this blog. Some get very lucky that they get the same domain name for their blog but still I think if you think carefully, you’ll get a lot of readers on your blog.
P.S. I don’t think your Twitter extension is working? I can only see the check but where to put your Twitter ID? I don’t use Twitter but just curious.
@RAJESH That’s just low buddy, you’re commenting on others blogs and encourage them to click your ads?Me,as a blog reader i wouldn’t visit your blog even if you’ll pay me,grow up!
Now back on topic. When you write a blog you are telling the world who you are,how you see things and how good at you in what you write.
Controversial and popular you say…women should not have the right to eat. fail.
